Lamborghini Rentals
The History of Lamborghini
In 1916, a man who would become a mechanical wizard and legend of sports car innovation was born in Italy. Feruccio Lamborghini found his calling while stationed on an isolated island devoid of the automotive conveniences we’ve come to enjoy today. Utilizing reused parts abandoned by other vehicle owners, Lamborghini became a genius of mechanics and when he returned to Italy, he opened a repair shop that made its name manufacturing tractors from outdated military vehicles. Disillusioned by his experiences with so-called “high performance” cars, Lamborghini decided to build his own car, and outfitted it with a V12 engine. Teaming up with former Ferrari engine builder Giampaolo Dallaro, Lamborghini crafted an all aluminum engine with a crankshaft supported by seven main bearings – an engine that became the prototype for all future Lamborghini engines.
In 1963, the 350 GTV was unveiled at the Turin Auto Show, and the rest, as they say, is history. Sales were unparalleled for a startup vehicle, and in the years following, Lamborghini’s stock rose as he and his partners continued to innovate with designs that took other car manufacturers by surprise. Faced with a major setback in 1974, when a large South American order for Lamborghini’s moneymaking tractors was cancelled and the expansion Lamborghini had set in motion to meet the demand took a huge bite out of profits, the Italian visionary took a huge step out of the company’s day-to-day operations. Despite the fallout, the Lamborghini name continued to thrive and, through a number of various owners and operators, found its way into the 1990s with a buyout by German powerhouse Audi.
In Audi’s hands, the Lamborghini empire rose again with the illustrious Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder. Unveiled in 2005, the Spyder has yet to slow down or diminish in popularity. With the classic Lamborghini flip-up doors and convertible top, in conjunction with its rear-mounted engine and low center of gravity, the Gallardo Spyder and its counterpart the Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera are the ultimate in sports car perfection. The low-to-the-road balance encourages the precision handling sports car enthusiasts have to come to expect from Lamborghini.
